It’s more important than ever to make your CV stand out from the crowd in today’s increasingly competitive job market. Employers will gain valuable insight into your abilities thanks to the emphasis your resume places on your accomplishments and achievements.

Here are 10 questions to ask yourself when constructing an achievement-focused CV that displays your successes – regardless of your previous experience or the types of roles you’ve held in the past.

 1. How quickly did you advance in your previous roles?

Employers will always be impressed by previous promotions. These demonstrate that you went above and beyond the call of duty and were rewarded accordingly.

 2. In your previous positions, how many individuals did you help?

Have you been tasked with training new team members? The high degree of trust shown by your previous employer by putting you in that role is evident. The amount of people you have communicated with is also important to mention.

3. How did you support any improvements in your previous business?

You may talk about the ways in which you streamlined operations or elevated your team’s standing within the company and among its customers. It’s helpful to give concrete instances of what you’ve accomplished.

4. What problems have you previously solved?

While every company is unique, many of the challenges they face are surprisingly similar. Provide examples of problems you have solved in previous roles, and the process you took to arrive at an effective conclusion.

5. Did you make any changes that are still in place at your former employers?

Have you developed and implemented any policies, procedures, or standards that were so valuable to the business that they kept them in place even after you left?

6. Have your achievements been recognised with any awards?

Did you directly, or as part of a team win any awards, either internally or externally? While modesty is commendable, it’s necessary to let people know about your achievements.

7. Did you become an expert in a particular specialism?

In what ways did you become a subject matter expert in your previous roles? This reflects your previous company’s faith in your skills and the recognition you’ve earned for them.

8. What were your proudest moments?

Not only may you use this opportunity for a humble brag, but it also demonstrates that you care deeply about your jobs.

9. Did you participate in any focus groups or work on any change projects?

Highlight the types of projects you either worked on independently, as part of a wider team, or as a champion of change within your previous company.

Potential employers can then visualise you contributing to their teams and the wider business.

10. Have you ever finished an assignment or task ahead of schedule?

The capacity to save time, and hence money, is highly valued in any profession. Provide examples of where you have done this, and the positive impact it had on your former employers.
